Diabetes mellitus can also be referred to as ‘diabetes’. Experts feel that this is a syndrome that can be characterized by abnormal levels of blood sugar and disordered metabolism. The disease results from reduced levels of the hormone insulin with or without resistance of the body towards effects of insulin.

The symptoms of existence of this disease include frequent urination, increase fluid intake, weight loss, blurred vision and lethargy or fatigue. One may not experience these symptoms if the blood sugar is only mildly increased.

A) There are three primary forms of diabetes as mentioned below:

a)	Type1 diabetes

b)	Type2 diabetes

c)	Type 3 diabetes or gestational

All the above mentioned three types of diabetes are caused by different reasons. The main reason for occurrence of the above mentioned three types of diabetes remains inability of pancreas’s beta cells to produce adequate insulin in order to prevent triggering of the condition known as hypoglycemia.

B) The cause, however are different for the occurrence of all three types of diabetes.

a)	Type1 diabetes:

This occurs due to destruction of autoimmune tendency of pancreatic beta cells.

b)	Type2 diabetes:

The disease can be easily characterized by resistance of insulin in tissues. This results in the requirement for higher amounts of insulin. The final result is diabetes that develops when beta cells are not able to meet the demand of insulin amount.

c)	Gestational diabetes:

It is quite similar to type2 diabetes. When it comes to involving resistance of insulin, the hormones of pregnancy can also result in resistance of insulin. This type of diabetes usually gets resolved as soon as the birth of baby takes place.

Type1 and Type2 diabetes are chronic conditions. There is no permanent cure for these conditions.

The treatment of diabetes can be done only via injecting insulin. Experts mean that dietary factors and certain lifestyle changes are also required for better treatment effects. When it comes to Type2 diabetes the management of the disease can be effectively done via combining dietary treatment, injections, tablets and insulin supplements.

The production of insulin is from natural sources like porcine pancreas. However, most insulin widely used these days are produced via genetic engineering. This is either done as a direct copy of human insulin or same insulin in conjunction with modified molecules that provide different onset and action duration. The same insulin can also be obtained via a specialized pump that provides insulin via changeable catheter.

All three types of diabetes have certain signs and symptoms so that one can identify the disease in the body.

C) Here are some of the signs and symptoms of diabetes to facilitate you to detect the traces of this disease as early as possible.

a)	Rapid weight loss can be seen in Type1 diabetes.

b)	Type2 diabetes can be characterized by changes in the shaped of the lenses of the eyes and blurred vision.

c)	People with Type1 diabetes may also suffer from diabetic ketoacidosis or DKA. It is an extreme state of metabolic dysregulation. It is usually characterized by a typical smell of acetone in the patient’s breath.

d)	Other symptoms include polyuria, Kussmaul breathing, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting and several states of consciousness or arousal. In certain severe cases, coma may also follow leading to death.

Remember that it is very important to treat diabetes mellitus to avoid serious health complications.

In order to determine if a person has diabetes, there are some blood tests that can be performed.

To perform the fasting glucose test, the doctor will take blood from a vein in the patient’s arm, but it is important that the patient has not eaten in the last 8 hours. The red blood cells are separated from the sample, and in the remaining plasma it is measured the amount of glucose. Diabetes can be indicated by a plasma level of 7.8 mmol/L or greater. To confirm the results, this test must be taken again in another day.

In postprandial glucose test, the blood must be taken right after the patient has eaten a meal.

In what concerns the oral glucose tolerance test, there are taken blood samples from a vein before and after a patient drinks a thick, sweet syrup of glucose and other sugars. It is known that in a non-diabetic, immediately after the drink the glucose level in the blood goes up, but then decreases gradually, because the insulin is used by the body to metabolize or absorb the sugar. In a diabetic, the things are different: the glucose level in the blood goes up and stays high after drinking the liquid. When it had passed two hours after drinking the syrup, and also at a point during the two-hour test period, a plasma glucose level of 11.1 mmol/L or higher confirms the diagnosis of diabetes.

The doctors can say a patient has diabetes if there are symptoms of diabetes and a plasma glucose level of at least 11.1 mmol/L, a fasting plasma glucose level of at least 7 mmol/L, or a two-hour plasma glucose level of at least 11.1 mmol/L during an oral glucose tolerance test.

Patients with diabetes can monitor their own blood glucose levels with the help of some home blood glucose monitoring kits.

It is known that there is no cure for diabetes, but patients can live a relatively normal life if they are carefully managing the condition. The treatment for diabetes has as main purposes preventing the long-term complications, and keeping blood glucose within normal range.

The use of insulin or oral medications are important in preventing complications of diabetes, but a careful monitored diet and exercise are also important.

In many cases of type II diabetes, loosing weight is important. There must be followed a diet that consists in 50-60% of calories from carbohydrates, approximately 10-20% of calories from protein, and calories from fat should be less than 30%. It is known that the number of calories depends on the age of the patient, but also depends on the activity level and weight.

A nutritionist or dietitian should be consulted, and there can be made a diet plan for each individual.

In order to lower the blood glucose levels in type II diabetes, there can be used oral medications. Usually, the first drugs prescribed for type II diabetes are in a class of compounds called sulfonylureas. We can mention tolbutamide, tolazamide, acetohexamide, and chlorpropamide. Glyburide, glimeperide, and glipizide are some newer drugs, that are included in the same class mentioned before. Seems that the role of these drugs is to stimulate pancreas cells to produce more insulin.

There also appeared some new medications to treat diabetes: metformin, acarbose, and troglitizone. It is known that all drugs have side effects: can stimulate weight gain, cause stomach irritation, or present increased risk in other situations.

It is known that there are made constant advances in the development of new oral medications for patients with diabetes. For example, in 2003 was developed Metaglip, a combination between glipizide and metformin. There was approved another drug, Avandamet, which combines metformin and rosiglitazone.

There exist a lot of drugs nowadays, and the doctor will decide which suits best for every individual.

It is known that patients with type I diabetes need daily insulin injections, to help their body use glucose; the amount and type of insulin depends on every individual. In what concerns the patients having type II diabetes, some of them may need to take insulin injections if they cannot control their diabetes with diet, exercise, and oral medication.

Usually, the most commonly used is the purified human insulin, but there exists also insulin from beef and pork. There can be mixed different types of insulin and given in one dose or split into two or more doses during a day. Also, insulin pump can be used in patients who need multiple injections over a day. Regular insulin is fast-acting, starts to work within 15-30 minutes, has a peak- effect at about 2 hours after it is injected, and the effect lasts 4-6 hours. Neutral protamine Hagedorn and Lente insulin are intermediate-acting, start to work within one to three hours, and last for 18-26 hours; ultra-lente, a long lasting form of insulin starts to work within four to eight hours and lasts 28-36 hours.

Alcohol consumption, too much insulin, too little food or increased exercise can lead to hypoglycemia, and the person having this may be hungry, cranky, confused, and tired. There ca appear other symptoms as well.

In what concerns surgery, the transplantation of a healthy pancreas into a diabetic patient is a successful treatment, but it is not clear if the potential benefits outweigh the risks of the surgery and drug therapy needed.

One Chinese herb that shows promise in the treatment of diabetes in called mai men dong or ophiopogon. Research done in China has demonstrated that it can potentially stimulate regeneration of cells in the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. The cells in this part of the pancreas are responsible for the proper production of insulin, and therefore the proper processing of blood sugar in the body. Stimulating regeneration of these cells can potentially reverse diabetes in adult-onset diabetics.

Bitter melon, also known as balsam pear, is a tropical vegetable widely cultivated in Asia, Africa and South America, and has been used extensively in folk medicine as a remedy for diabetes. The blood sugar lowering action of the fresh juice or extract of the unripe fruit has been clearly established in both experimental and clinical studies.

Asian ginseng is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat diabetes. It has been shown to enhance the release of insulin from the pancreas and to increase the number of insulin receptors. It also has a direct blood sugar-lowering effect.

A recent study found that 200 mg of ginseng extract per day improved blood sugar control as well as energy levels in Type 2 diabetes (NIDDM).

Vaccinium Myrtuillus is commonly called blueberry. A concoction of the leaves of the blueberry plant injected is only slightly less effective but less toxic than insulin. Its beneficial effects can last several weeks. The active ingredient is myrtillin, used to improve the functioning of the vascular system and effective in preventing diabetic retinopathy—an eye disorder associated with diabetes.

Blueberry Leaves – Leaves of Blueberries or Vaccinium Myrtillus have been commonly used in folk medicine for the treatment of diabetes. They contain an active ingredient called Myrtillin. Myrtillin is an anthocyanaoside that increases capillary integrity, inhibit the damage caused by free radicals and improve the patient’s vascular health. In Europe it is commonly used as an anti-hemorrhagic agent for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy. Myrtillin is also injected intravenously. It is a little weaker than insulin but said to be less toxic even when taken 50 times a gram per day therapeutic dose. Even a single dose of Myrtillin is said to produce effects that last several weeks.

Vizaysaar (Pterocarpus marsupium)

Vizaysaar is a big tree whose bark is very useful for diabetes. The bark of the tree is made into a wooden glass and the glass is termed as “The miracle cure for diabetes”. Some water is kept in the wooden glass overnight and is consumed early morning by diabetes patients. The color of the water changes to brown and glass is changed after around 1 month when the water color does not change. Diabeta Plus contains extract of bark of this miracle tree.

Pterocarpus marsupium (Indian Kino, Malabar Kino, Pitasara, Venga)

This medicinal herb has been used in ayurvedic medicine for diabetes treatment for a long time. In clinical studies it has been shown to provide a blood sugar balancing property. Epicatechin, a flavonoid extracted from the bark of this plant, protects the beta cells in the pancreas from damage that causes a reduction in insulin production. In studies involving rats, this herbal treatment for diabetes even showed promise in rejuvenating damaged beta cells in the pancreas. This is the only herb, or drug, with this potential.

When the kidneys are unable to conserve water as they perform their function of filtering blood, there can appear an uncommon condition called diabetes insipidus.

ADH, also called vasopressin is the hormone that controls the amount of water conserved. This hormone is produced in the hypothalamus, a region of the brain, and then is stored and released from the pituitary gland, a small gland at the base of the brain.

When a lack of ADH causes diabetes insipidus, we can say we are dealing with a condition called central diabetes insipidus.

The condition called nephrogenic diabetes insipidus appears when diabetes insipidus is caused by failure of the kidneys to respond to ADH.

We must mention that diabetes insipidus has as major symptoms excessive urination and extreme thirst.

It is known that as a result of the damage to the hypothalamus or pituitary gland after a surgery, infection, tumor, or head injury, there can appear central diabetes insipidus.

This diabetes is rare, but even so, it is more common than nephrogenic diabetes insipidus.

In what concerns nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, it is related to a defect in the parts of the kidneys that reabsorb water back into the bloodstream. This diabetes can also appear because of an inherited disorder. Male children receive from their mothers on the X chromosome the abnormal gene that causes the disease.

Diseases of the kidney like polycystic kidney disease and the effects of certain drugs like lithium, amphotericin B, demeclocycline can also cause nephrogenic diabetes insipidus.

Usually, diabetes insipidus can show symptoms like excessive thirst- which can be intense or uncontrollable and may involve a craving for ice water- and excessive urine volume.

As signs and tests we can mention urinalysis, MRI of the head, and in what concerns the urine output, in central diabetes insipidus is suppressed by a dose of ADH, and in nephrogenic diabetes insipidus not suppressed by a dose of ADH.

It is very important to treat the cause of the underlying condition if possible.

Vasopressin, which can be administered as either a nasal spray or tablets can control central diabetes insipidus . Unfortunately, this is not effective for patients with nephrogenic diabetes insipidus.

If nephrogenic diabetes insipidus is caused by medication, it is important to quit that medication because this will lead to recovery of normal kidney function.

In what concerns hereditary nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, this is treated with fluid intake to match urine output and drugs that lower urine output.

It is known that when an individual’s system is unable to efficiently process glucose, there will appear multiple health problems. The body’s inability to break down sugars and store them properly leads to a chronic metabolic condition called diabetes.

Statistics say that there exist over one hundred and twenty million individuals worldwide, and there also are about five million individuals who have diabetes that hasn’t been diagnosed yet.

There exist two types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2.

Also called juvenile diabetes, type 1 diabetes has its onset in childhood. Studies revealed that juvenile diabetes is an auto-immune disorder, and some of those who have it also develop thyroid conditions.

It is also known that children diagnosed with juvenile diabetes are insulin dependent.

Type 2 diabetes usually appears in adults, but there were made some studies that suggest young people can develop this type of diabetes too. Usually, this type of diabetes appears in persons who are over 40 years old, are overweight, sedentary, and have a family history of diabetes. A healthy diet and exercise can control the diabetes.

As symptoms of the type 1 diabetes we can mention excessive thirst, frequent urination, chronic weakness and fatigue, blurred vision, but also nausea and vomiting, irritability and exaggerated hunger, although weight loss occurs.

In what concerns the type 2 diabetes, symptoms may appear more subtle. There can appear the symptoms mentioned before, and also recurring bladder infections, sores that heal slowly, itchiness and tingling or numbness in hands or feet.

Medical treatment and supervision is required, because, otherwise serious health problems can appear. There can appear complications like heart attacks, blindness, nerve damage that can ultimately cause loss of limbs, and kidney failure.

It is important to know that those who have type 1 diabetes need four to five insulin shots per day because the pancreas does not manufacture insulin. The body needs insulin in order to metabolize glucose from the food we eat and turn it into energy.

In what concerns the type 2 diabetes, the pancreas will still manufacture insulin, but oral medication and a proper diet is needed to offset the symptoms.

Insulin is a synthetic made hormone, and there are several types of insulin. They work at various speeds and duration during a twenty-four hour period.

It is important that patients monitor their blood sugars at regular intervals. This is needed in order to regulate their insulin and food intake.

In mild cases of diabetes, there can be used oral medications. A good thing to do is to include a healthy diet and exercise in your regiment.

Living with diabetes is difficult in the sense that you have to balance your daily sugar intake strictly. The discipline is certainly a play on a daily basis. Some people opt for a more natural way of dealing with the state. However, you must be careful not too many. Natural does not necessarily guarantee a cure or mitigation of symptoms.

The use of a more natural remedy

Finding a natural remedy is primarily part of the progression that many diabetics had to go through. For most, this is a manifestation of their discontent on conventional methods of treatment.

Is a natural cure available?

At present, there is no known cure for diabetes – May be it natural or medication. Despite numerous studies on the state, the only conclusions that researchers have been able to develop were the genetic and environmental dynamics of the disease.

The main challenge to all cases of diabetes is to regulate levels of blood sugar in the body, something that can be done by a change in diet, weight loss and physical exercises, as well as medicines or insulin injections. Type 1 diabetes will require multiple doses of insulin injections per day, while type 2 diabetes at the beginning will generally managed by a change in lifestyle. If necessary, medicines and injections of insulin May be used. Of the two, Type 2 diabetes is probably the one that respond well to treatment more natural.

Fight against diabetes in a natural way

The natural way of the fight against diabetes normally involves a well-balanced meal plan. A nutritionist can help in the planning process to assist the patient to choose foods that provide energy to control the level of sugar in the blood. The diet is generally high in fiber and low in fat.

Maintaining a healthy weight is also necessary in the fight against diabetes since obesity can certainly increase the risk of development and aggravate the condition. However, weight loss must be done slowly but surely and without any assistance whatsoever feeding chemicals or tablets.

The relationship between diabetes and CoQ10

The coenzyme Q10 is a natural substance found in the mitochondria of cells. It would have an effect of strengthening the body’s ability to produce energy, and it is also seen as an anti-oxidant. Hence, many diabetics to take regular CoQ10 supplements to take advantage of its therapeutic effects naturally.

Despite the absence of clinical evidence, the potential of coenzyme Q10 as a natural treatment for diabetes is widely accepted. The antioxidant properties of CoQ10 also fantastic defence against free radicals.

CoQ10 helps neutralize these free radicals and even reduce or prevent cellular damage. For diabetics, CoQ10 May help boost energy and strengthen the body’s immune system. It May also be beneficial to help reduce the risk of developing heart disease and hypertension, two of the most common complications associated with diabetes.

Natural Alternatives have their limits

Natural cure for the condition is still a need tons of research. For now, the best way to combat the disease is through strict maintenance and regulation of levels of sugar in the blood. A huge amount of caution must also be used in their research on natural alternatives to diabetic treatment.

Never immediately conclude that products labelled as “natural” is always safe and effective. You should always inform your doctor whenever you decide to take supplements above your usual treatment regime. A May harmful drug interactions occur, and even May your life be jeopardized because of this. Keep in mind that an ounce of prevention is always better than cure.
